Why reliability
The reliability of products and processes is of growing importance. The short term effects of warranty claims or down-time can have a large impact on profitability. In the longer term, a reputation for poor reliability will lead to loss of customers and loss of business. However, the techniques for specification, analysis, laboratory trials, prediction and improvement are not widely known and many mistakes have been made in the past.

Course information

This two day course is aimed at engineers and managers in design, development, manufacturing and quality functions. It is also of value to others in sales, service and marketing who either specify reliability or suffer because of it. Delegates do not require any knowledge of statistics, though they should be able to calculate standard deviations with a suitable calculator.

Course content
The course is a blend of teaching and exercises which are tackled by small teams.
• What is reliability, how to describe it and specify it
• Techniques to predict reliability
• How to perform and interpret laboratory trials
• How to collect, analyse and interpret field failure results
• Cost effective methods to improve reliability
• Burn-in, stress screening and other strategies.

Examples are given from a range of industries.

Expected results
By the end of the course, delegates will have a strong understanding of reliability concepts and know how to obtain the biggest improvements with limited resources. They will have knowledge of the methods used to collect and analyse field failure data, and how to perform reliability trials and interpret the results. Some delegates may want consultancy support for their first application of the techniques.
